Nutrition: Results May Vary

background-berries-berry-blackberries-87818As I was eating raspberries this morning I considered how berries have been a hit or miss proposition in my recovery.

Blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries are okay.  Strawberries, no – at least at this point.

The reason behind it is something most people probably don’t consider.

I never did.

Yet lack of awareness of the condition could be dangerous.  To summarize, the foods you eat and beverages you drink will affect you differently depending on the water you drink.

Specifically, whether or not you have hard [high calc] water.

I learned that foods high in calcium can be problematic if your primary drinking water is hard. This is not limited to cheeses, and in fact includes many foods, including so-called superfoods, that are purportedly good for your health.

Eating foods that are a significant source of calcium when you already have too much in your body can cause great harm.

Once I moved to a location where we had water that was not hard, I was able to eat many foods that had previously caused issues.  However, others, that had not been an issue, became one.

I believe this fluctuation is due to changing chemistry as I continue to reduce excess calcium, and will eventually resolve.

Looking back, I see why I got so terribly sick for a period of weeks while following an immune recovery diet.  Most of the foods were significant sources of calcium and we had hard water.

I also felt awful after taking a vitamin D supplement, so I quit almost immediately.

It wasn’t until I moved that I began to understand the impact of hard water on my recovery efforts.

In eating healthy foods which included dark leafy green vegetables and cheese high in k2, I was exacerbating a problem.

I was making myself very ill.

Taking a vitamin D supplement made it ever worse.

The vitamin D Council advises against taking vitamin D supplements if you have high blood calcium levels. 

I had been frustrated because after years of incredible progress thanks to the nutritional approach, I was sliding back.

Though I did not get a return of the EMF Sensitivity.

It wasn’t until moving to the new water source that I fully understood.

I began to recover immediately upon moving.

I have no doubt that medications would also affect people differently depending on their diet and the type of water they drink; what nutrients are in it.  That foods can become harmful because of drinking hard water should be considered when mapping out a healing path.

Do not assume because a food is supposedly good for you that it wouldn’t cause grave harm to you personally.

The best advice here is to pay attention to how you feel after eating or drinking and make adjustments as appropriate.

A Sign from Nature.  I made an interesting observation during this time.  The gel from an aloe vera plant turned blood red in the location where we had hard water.

Online research turned up no explanation for it.

When we moved to the different water source, this phenomenon stopped.

Additionally, plants that had anemic growth with the hard water began to – and continue to – thrive with the new water source.

It’s the little things that matter.

So pay attention to them!

Tea and Champagne for Yellow Nails

champagne-a-spot-of-teaAfter using nutrition to cure my EMF Sensitivity and Rheumatic Arthritis, I decided to give a little TLC to my kidneys and liver.

Exposure to toxic water and air had taken their toll.

I had mop up symptoms including 2 nails that, though they had been getting better, were still yellow.

As I restored my nutritional balance the nails regained their health in texture and color.  However, I had hit a plateau.

To accomplish this I would use herbal teas.  Specifically, dandelion root, nettles, and chicory root.

Herbs.  Long before there were pharmacies people went to their gardens for the medicines they needed.  Various parts of the plants, including stems, leaves, and roots, were used in the form of teas and tinctures for healing.

Thankfully, this is a tradition still carried on.  Herbs are powerful medicines and are packed with vitamins and minerals.

I purchased the herbs from a local herb store.

It can be surprisingly difficult to find medicinal herbs in certain parts of the United States.  Fortunately, many herb stores will ship.

Tea Time.  I began drinking 2 to 4 cups of each herbal tea every day.  Within three days I noticed the yellow had become lighter.

Tea Total.  Not.  One day I decided to have champagne with dinner.

Something told me it would help with the mop up symptoms.

The next day the yellow was significantly lighter.  I decided to continue drinking champagne with dinner.

Research revealed that champagne offers numerous health benefits.

Within ten days of this protocol all the yellow was gone from my nails!

This yellow had been in my nails for years. 

Curious as to why the champagne accelerated the healing, I did a bit of research.  I suspect that the yellow in the nails was caused by too much nitric acid.

Champagne reduces nitric acid in the blood.

A colorless liquid acid used in the manufacturing of fertilizers, nitric acid will turn skin yellow.

Agricultural runoff is a common and unfortunate occurrence as it compromises the safety of drinking water. 

I continued drinking the teas throughout the day, along with two glasses of champagne with dinner.

I adjusted the protocol as my needs changed.

Once the yellow was gone I whittled it down to dandelion root and chicory root teas, eventually going with just chicory root tea.  I discontinued the champagne.

The Health Benefits of Alcohol.  Alcohol has played a key role throughout my recovery.  I have followed my body’s signals carefully, abstaining when it made sense but having alcohol when it made sense.  I always drank with a meal and consumed in moderation.

Curing EMF Sensitivity – Timeline

$_35July 2009:   I figure out that I am sensitive to ultra-low and very low electromagnetic frequencies, including those emitted from geologic fault lines in the days and hours before an earthquake.

September 2014:  After suffering debilitating and life altering symptoms and a relapse of Rheumatic Arthritis, I figure out why.

Exposure to environmental poisons while living in the San Francisco Bay area compromised my immune system.  The toxins displaced vital nutrients and left me with severe nutritional deficiencies.

I began an aggressive regimen to reverse the damage.

I was convinced that if I repaired and then strengthened my immune system, I would be free of Rheumatic Arthritis and EMF Sensitivity for good.

The program, outlined in The Healing Path, consists of detoxifying the poisons which included heavy metals, and restoring lost nutrients.

The nutrients, and minerals in particular, are necessary for the production of hormones and enzymes, and the proper functioning and maintenance of the human body.

December 2014:  I feel like a new person.

 Every few moths I notice improvement.

June 2015:  I realize that I am no longer EMF Sensitive.

This validates my theory about how to cure autoimmune conditions such as EMF Sensitivity and RA.

October 2015:  I began to notice the regimen has another benefit.  As the toxins are removed, painful and hurtful memories are neutralized.

This happens in reverse, with the most recent incidents first, though there was a bit of bouncing around of a specific and particularly difficult ten-year period.

 I always knew which memories were being neutralized.  I would get a flashback and within a span of hours to days, the emotional pain associated with the difficult memory was gone, never to return.

April 2016:  Other than “mop up” symptoms that are not directly related to either EMF Sensitivity or Rheumatic Arthritis, I am completely cured.

The symptoms are a result of nutritional deficiencies.

I begin tackling deficiencies through food and supplements.

May 2016:  Less than two years after starting the regimen, I am healthy and living a normal life.

My immune system continues to strengthen.

I was able to reverse over ten years of toxic exposure in less than 24 months because I took an aggressive approach.

I would not recommend this for everyone.  It was brutal at times.

I could not have done this without the support of my family, especially my husband who made juices, cooked, and picked up the slack when I was sick, tired, and weak.

Being stubborn helps.

While I wish my kids hadn’t had  front row seats to this, I can take heart that they celebrated every victory with me, including my return to health.  They also have an incredible understanding of human physiology and the effect of environmental toxins and the importance of good nutrition on human health.

In Part 2 I will list the top considerations for healing EMF Sensitivity and any autoimmune condition.

Weaning off DHEA

_467_4Look Ma, No Hands!  I have known for some time that it was time to wean off the supplemental DHEA I was taking.

I took it to support my adrenals while I was detoxing the poisons from my system and rebuilding my mineral stores.

I had tried to get off of the supplement before, unsuccessfully.

I would experience pain in my joints that was so intense I could barely get out of bed, stand upright, or walk. I took the DHEA and the pain went away.

I looked about on the web for anything that might help me in my efforts to wean off but all I found initially were message boards where people shared the  nasty side effects, (i.e. joint pain and fatigue)  they experienced when attempting to wean off of DHEA.

Not good.

Utilizing what I knew from my own road to recovery from Rheumatic Arthritis AND EMF Sensitivity, I decided to “try something.”

I came to understand through my own experience that Rheumatic Arthritis is caused by low testosterone/DHEA. If you replenish the levels the symptoms will go away. Only addressing the underlying cause will cure you. I chose the latter.

Knowing that our bodies make essential hormones and enzymes from minerals I decided to flood my body with minerals so that as I weaned off of the synthetic stuff my body would have what it needed to make its own.

I would say that magnesium is the key mineral but potassium is a very very close second.

PREPARE!!! I began taking 10 – 15 drops of ConcenTrace Liquid Trace Minerals in a glass of filtered water every 2 hours  beginning several days before lowering the dose of DHEA.

I also decided to follow my husband’s suggestion of lowering the dose slowly in increments of 5mg.

GENERAL GUIDANCE: I was fortunate to find an article that provided general guidelines. I was thrilled to see that DHEA should be fairly easy to wean off of. Article Here.

Provided your body was primed ahead of time.

WAHOO! My strategy worked. As I began to lower the dose I experienced almost no side effects whatsoever.

Slight fatigue. No joint pain.

SPEED:  I was able to wean off of DHEA much quicker than I anticipated.

I thought I’d be on at least 10 mg for three months.

I believe I was able to achieve this because of flooding my body with minerals ahead of time.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE? I went from 30mg/day to zero within five days.

DAY ONE:     I took 30mg in the am.

DAY TWO:    I took 15mg in the am, 15mg in the pm.

DAY THREE: I took 10mg in the am, 15 in the pm.

DAY FOUR:   I took 10 mg in the am, 5 in the pm.

DAY FIVE:     I took 10 mg in the am, 0 in the pm.

What led me to reduce so quickly was the fact I felt worse after taking the DHEA.  I felt better not taking it.

NOTHING BEATS THE REAL THING: A very pleasant surprise was how powerful my own hormones are compared to the synthetic.

Thanks to providing my body with the fuel it needed to produce the hormones and enzymes – minerals – my own system took over seamlessly.

WHAT’S NEXT?  Well, I’m still detoxing.

As I’ve said, the EMF Sensitivity and Rheumatic Arthritis were symptoms of a bigger issue.

Based on today’s unexpected and most unpleasant memory, I am now dealing with 1980.

A very unpleasant year.

The twelve months after my brain surgery were, as you might imagine, a miserable experience for a sixth grader.

I was constantly having brain scans and EEGs, blood work and examinations ad nauseum (literally and figuratively).

I can only imagine the toxins coming out. They pumped a drugstore into me after the surgery, including medications to keep me in a coma.

Even as these medications kept me alive they were destroying my electro-chemical balance.

I am not surprised that I went so quickly from the early 90s to 1980. I was so disgusted by what I’d gone through that I refused to take medications, including over-the-counter, unless there was no choice.

The exception – I needed narcotic relief for the debilitating migraines. Migraines I now realize resulted from potassium levels lowered by the medication I was given after the brain surgery.

The detox as related to difficult memories continues the pattern. The memory flashes before me letting me know what time frame I’m “working on.”

In other words, post surgery medications.

Once the stuff is out? The memory loses it’s teeth.

I can think of the event without feeling like my guts are being ripped out.

LIFE IS GOOD!  It’s been about ten days of zero DHEA and I feel great!

I continued to take the minerals every two hours throughout the day until two days ago.  

I am now weaning off of the liquid minerals.  My body is to the point I am able to absorb the minerals I need from the foods and juices I consume.

My diet primarily consists of bananas, potatoes, green apples, kale salad, a carrot/green apple/ginger/cilantro juice, and a healthy dinner that  includes beef a couple times a week.  

Not chicken with its arsenic or fish with mercury – grass fed organic beef.

Any water has to be  filtered.

I pretty much gave up red wine due to all the pesticides they spray on the grapes and I’ve had to switch from local beers to imported because of the local water.

Which is a bummer because the local ones are pretty good.  

I stick with IPAs for their magnesium content.

And I continue to be pleasantly surprised by how powerful my own hormones are.

Life Is Good!!!!!!

I would encourage people to do what they can to get off artificial hormones.

I recognize this may not always be possible. It would still be worth the effort of replenishing your body’s mineral stores so it can take over as much as possible and/or at least offset the artificial stuff.

 

Good Mineral, Bad Mineral – Zinc and Copper

615x200_ds-photo_199_46_fotolia_684004_XSOne of the unknowns that has haunted me throughout the last year is why I suffered periodical setbacks for no apparent reason.

How could I prevent a relapse if I didn’t know what caused it in the first place?

I would be feeling great and as if the worst was behind me, and suddenly I was experiencing certain symptoms again…when nothing obvious had changed.  These setbacks were more than frustrating, they were emotionally devastating.

I’d been doing so well, I’d been feeling so good, what happened?  It wasn’t fair!

Back to Basics. My entire approach to reversing EMF Sensitivity and Rheumatic Arthritis has been systematic. I have observed numerous cause and effect scenarios that enabled me to take steps in the direction of recovery.

And then out of nowhere, a curveball.

When we first moved to our current home I was definitely on the mend, Then, approximately six months later, I was sliding backward and feeling as bad if not worse, than I did back in the East Bay, where this  health nightmare originated. I learned I was drinking the same contaminated water.

Our city gets its water from 3 different sources.  One of them is the exact source that supplies the East Bay.  This is not a gift from the north.

Not all setbacks can be so easily explained though they can be easily remedied once you understand the problem.

An inexpensive Brita filter system from Target that filters out copper and mercury has done wonders for our return to health.

As a result of all this hoopla I have come to understand the good and bad associated with copper and zinc.

Hint: Zinc good, copper bad.

The youth mineral. High copper drives down both potassium and zinc. With low zinc levels you feel old. Your skin and hair become very dry. Your nails will be brittle and discolored. You have a difficult time finding motivation.

You could call zinc the procrastination mineral. When it’s low you procrastinate. When it’s balanced you get things done.

If your zinc levels are healthy you will not need moisturizer. Your hair will be in good condition and you will feel optimistic about life, even when there are challenges before you.

You will have the mental wherewithal to tackle what life throws at you.

The emotion mineral. I would go so far as to call copper the mineral of hopelessness and despair for this is what happens when you have too much of it.

It’s so bad you feel it’s pointless to even try to fix something. What’s the point, it won’t matter anyway becomes your mantra.

Fortunately for me, I know myself well enough to know this isn’t how I am. If I’m feeling this way, something is wrong.

I write of my struggle to understand this insidious symptom in my book Riding the Waves Diagnosing, Treating, and Living with EMF Sensitivity.

The mental and emotional damage from copper overload doesn’t stop there. Your mind races to the degree you cannot concentrate and you also feel paranoid.

Because I knew there was no logical explanation for these problems I repeatedly talked myself out of them. As I said, I knew this was not me so I refused to let myself act on these foreign feelings.

When you balance copper out, when you bring down high levels, your mental and emotional state returns to normal.

I used to say I felt like someone had poured molasses over my brain. That feeling disappears. You are able to concentrate. You no longer feel any of the weird, inexplicable negative emotions, such as hopelessness, despair, and paranoia. You feel calm again.  You feel hope again.

Here is an interesting tidbit. Zinc and copper cancel each other out. To bring copper down, take zinc. To bring zinc down, take copper.

You do not want to bring zinc down!

In dealing with high copper,, the ideal way to get zinc is to eat red meat. There is no substitute for nutrition from food. None. Nothing manmade is even close.

Supplements help but will eventually turn your hair black.

Food is the best way to get your nutrition and nothing beats red meat for zinc.  Eggs and chicken do not have enough zinc to get the copper down.

It has been noted that copper toxicity is a bigger problem for vegetarians and vegans.

Vitamin C also helps lower copper levels but it can interfere with zinc absorption.

Don’t take it if you are about to eat a hamburger.

With kids. I didn’t want my kids to go through the side effects associated with detoxing copper yet I knew they were affected.

My daughter’s racing mind was interfering with her schooling and my son became whiny and restless.

In addition to the supplements and nutrition regimen they follow, they get a daily dose of liquid zinc (5 drops).

I removed the liquid zinc drops for a period of four days and the high copper symptoms returned.

There are physical signs of high copper, such as a pale complexion, but it’s really how you feel that will tell the tale.

High copper = Feeling terrible and hopeless.  If you find yourself thinking what’s the point, beware!

There are physical signs of low zinc, such as dry skin and hair and a sunken look around your eyes, but it’s how you feel that will tell the tale.

Low zinc = Feeling old, very very old.

Medical implications.  I can’t help but wonder how many patients being treated for depression are simply copper toxic and don’t need medication at all. I wonder about conspiracy theorists and their feelings of paranoia. Could it be a simple mineral imbalance? Are those who can’t keep tNew Year’s Resolutions simply low in zinc?  And all those kids on medication after being diagnosed with ADD?  They are probably just copper toxic and simply lowering those levels and raising the zinc would result in all symptoms of ADD vanishing.  Without pharmaceutical intervention.

There are parents who have “cured” their child’s ADD after cleaning up their diet.

Odds and Ends.  If your zinc is low your blood sugar will yo-yo.  If your copper is high, your sense of time passing will be affected.  You will feel a panicky sense of urgency,, like if some certain thing doesn’t happen, disaster will result.  You also feel as if more time has passed than has actually passed.

Hint: You can think all the positive thoughts you want ,but if you are lacking health you won’t be able to get your vibration up.
