Does Feng Shui Work? Definitely, but…(1)

What is Feng Shui?  Not long ago, I was having a conversation with a woman about feng shui.  She stiffened and indignantly stated, “My husband and I don’t practice that religion.”
Religion, huh?  I hadn’t heard it described like that before.  I suppose if you consider religion a philosophy, then you could see feng shui as a religion.  I still think that’s a stretch, however.  I think feng shui is simply a system of organizing that is consistent with common sense.  If you live in a cluttered disorganized environment, it’s going to negatively impact your life.  If such a lifestyle were to continue, it’s easy to see where a domino effect happened and your life ended up reflecting  your environment: chaotic, disorganized, and stressful.

If you make the effort to declutter, organize, and (gulp) simplify, then it follows that your life will soon reflect those changes.  So, does feng shui work?  Definitely, but…

Be Prepared.  “Now that we’ve painted the living room, the dining room looks so dingy.”

Once you begin taking action consistent with the principles espoused by feng shui (i.e., that your environment be as harmonious and pleasant as you can make it), you’ll find that the resulting changes can have a dramatic effect on more than just the four walls you may be staring at.

Did you paint?  If so, (presuming you did it right – meaning PREP), you’ll have to decide whether or not to replace the artwork that was hanging.  Does it go with the new color scheme?  Or, more importantly, does that artwork still suit you?  Is it a dated piece you’ve simply been moving from dorm room to first apartment to house to …?  Maybe it’s time to pass that artwork on.  And if you do that…

What are you going to put in its place?  Something from the garage/attic?  Something from another room?  Or will you have to make a trip to an art store or visit art.com?  What about leaving it blank?  And if you do…

Is it a large wall?  Maybe you need to slide a piece of furniture in its place.  If so…

Where will it come from?  The basement storage room?  The corner of the living room?

If you paint one room, will all the other rooms look shabby by comparison?  And if you repaint your entire house, do the carpets now appear filthy?  Maybe it’s time to rent the carpet cleaner at the grocery store…

If you’ve made the decision to include feng shui principles in your life and efforts to improve your life…be prepared…
